Design Guide | Mulberry and marine
Exploring the beauty of bold colour pairings in pattern-rich interiors
In the Imogen Heath studio, playing with colour is at the heart of what we do. This month, we've been particularly drawn to the expressive pairing of Mulberry and Marine, two palettes that, when combined, create a scheme that’s rich in depth, movement and joy.
The Marine palette floats between blue and green, touching on teal, aqua, sapphire and cerulean. It brings a cool energy that’s both grounding and expansive. By contrast, Mulberry pinks, ranging from dusty rose to deep plum, offer warmth, drama and unexpected softness.
Together, these tones strike a perfect balance between boldness and harmony. Whether applied in upholstery, wallpaper or layered through accessories, they bring vibrancy without overpowering a space.
Colour in Conversation
What makes this combination feel so fresh is the way the colours interact when brought to life through pattern and texture. A sofa upholstered in Heather in Rose, accented with scatter cushions in Edith in Sea Green, creates a lively mix of tones and rhythm. It’s perfect for a living space that feels both curated and relaxed.
We’ve been exploring ways to use this colour story across our printed textiles and embroidered passementerie, building palettes that celebrate contrast while still feeling cohesive.

Ways to Introduce Mulberry & Marine
Start with one dominant tone. Perhaps a marine-based print on a headboard or drapes, then layer in softer mulberry shades through piping, cushions or an upholstered bench. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns. Stripes, geometrics and painterly florals can all sit together beautifully when tied together through colour.
Textiles with rich surface interest, such as woven linen, embroidery or jacquard, help to elevate the scheme and stop it from feeling too flat. The result is a space full of character, colour and quiet confidence.
Combined these colours create rooms that feel fun and uplifting, especially when introduced across playfully mismatched patterns - a sofa upholstered in Heather in Rose with scatter cushions in Edith in Sea Green would make for a particularly special living room!
