Design Diaries | Cortney Bishop and The Ryder Hotel

Sometimes an enquiry lands in our inbox that encourages us to step a little out of our comfort zone, prompting us to get even more creative. Earlier this year, the inimitable Cortney Bishop got in touch with a request that did just that.

She was working on a total renovation of The Ryder Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina. While retaining the original structure built that dates back to 1958, everything else was subject to a complete overhaul. Built in the same year that Jack Kerouac’s novel The Dharma Bums was released, the hotel was renamed from The King Charles Inn to pay homage to Kerouac’s semi-fictional character Japhy Ryder - setting the tone for adventure, creativity and an exuberantly youthful sense of fun.

Cortney played into Charleston’s coastal city landscape and the history of the building by drawing inspiration from retro Miami pool parties with a palette of pinks and soft aqua greens. Our Anni Check fabric felt like it was meant to be, with its mid-century influence slotting perfectly into Cortney’s vision.

Designed into the scheme for the poolside restaurant, we were tasked with the challenge of translating our Anni Check into an outdoor performance fabric - a first for us! Achieving the finish we were after was a steep learning curve, and there are very few suppliers who manufacture outdoor fabrics to the standard we wanted. But we finally found an incredible company in Italy who worked with us to create a new iteration of the Anni Check that could be enjoyed by the pool.
